Why the state directory matters
Certification runs through your state's NARR affiliate, and the affiliate landscape changes. The kit's directory was compiled from NARR's own affiliate directory and links the affiliate's NARR profile for every state that has one, plus the honest next step for the states that do not. Where referral rules are written into law, Florida and Massachusetts are the clearest examples, the kit says exactly what that means for you.
Common questions
Do I need a license to open a sober living home?
In most states, no license is required for a home that only provides alcohol- and drug-free housing with peer support, because it is housing, not treatment. A growing number of states are the exception: some license sober living homes directly, and several tie treatment-provider referrals to certification by the state's NARR affiliate. What is NARR certification?
The National Alliance for Recovery Residences (NARR) publishes a national standard for recovery residences, and state affiliate organizations certify homes against it. Certification is how referral sources, from treatment centers to some courts, identify quality housing. In several states, providers are restricted from referring to homes without it.
Is a sober living home the same as a treatment facility?
No. A sober living home provides alcohol- and drug-free housing, structure, and peer support. It does not provide clinical treatment. If you plan to offer counseling, clinical services, or medication administration beyond self-administration support, you are moving toward a licensed treatment level, which is a different and heavier regulatory path.
How much does it cost to start a sober living home?
It depends on your market, house size, and whether you lease or buy. The biggest early line items are typically first and last month's rent or a down payment, furnishing per bed, insurance, and an operating reserve. Can a city use zoning to keep my sober living home out?
